A book ‘Collins, E. Anglu valodas pašmācība tālākam kursam [i.e. Self-taught course of English] / translated by Gustav Meisters, edited by Ernests Blese, the professor of Latvian University. Stuttgard: Ausmas Apgāds, 1946. 336 p. Original cardboard binding. Tear alongside the binding, overall in good condition. Together with appendix of questions to each lesson in English (lacking one page).

A letter in English to unknown ‘Sir’, written from DP camp, thanking him for the efforts in helping of brining Valgie and his family to America, mentioning their Lutheran connection and the fact that the addressee sent Valgie some publications, concerning the ‘Lutheran world’,
Quote from the letter: ‘Everyone here is very thankful to America for saving their lives. Our people are very thankful to your people, but often much of them can’t speak about it. Therefore everyone who can a little write obliged to thank American people for their heartiness and their benefaction. Dear sir, please thank the people there and tell them that people here will never forget it… When we will leave Europa for crossing to America, I write again… After two weeks we are going to Bremen harbour’. 10th of December, 1950. 2 p. 12 x 8 in.

The textbook itself is somewhat adapted to the national color, the limerick in Lesson 4 includes the mention of Riga: ‘There was a young lady in Riga / Who went for a ride on a tiger / But they finished the ride / WIth the lady inside / And a smile on the face of the tiger’.
Valgie made it to Montana, USA in the summer of 1951 and remained in the country since.
