#PG35
Ca. 1890s
Fifteen original albumen and gelatin silver photos, from ca. 21x27,5 cm (8 ¼ x 10 ¾ in) to ca. 16,5x22,5 cm (6 ½ x 8 ¾ in). All images with period pencil captions on verso; three with ink stamps of “Atelier Photographico de A.C. Santos, Funchal-Madeira” on verso; one with an ink stamp of “M.d. O. Perestrello, Funchal-Madeira” on verso. Five larger images with blind stamps “F. Rocchini, Photographo” in the lower corners. One photo with a minor loss of a corner, a few photos mildly faded, but overall a very good collection of interesting photos.
Interesting collection of fifteen early, well-preserved original albumen and gelatin silver studio photos of Portugal and Madeira in the late 19th century. Nine images of Madeira (including three gelatin silver photos by A.C. Santos and one albumen photo by M.d. O. Perestrello) show Funchal (general views with the harbour, Monte Railway with a steam engine, “Grand Hotel,” “Rua Bella Vista”), Camara de Lobos village, Cruzinhas viewpoint, and Ribeirado Cidrao canyon. There is also a lively scene with a traveller posing in a traditional carro do Monte sled, driven by two oxen. Five albumen photos by Francesco Rocchini show Sintra (Pena Palace, Montserrate Palace, general view with the Town Palace) and Jerónimos Monastery in Belem (South Portal, the cloister). The collection also includes an albumen view of St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valetta, Malta. Overall, a nice collection of early, well-preserved original photographs of Portugal and Madeira.
