#PF52
Ca. 1940
Panorama rolled into a tube, ca. 25,4 x 63,5 cm (10 x 24 ¾ in.) One vertical cease to the right border of the photograph, but otherwise very good.
Historically important photograph documenting the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Buddhist School at the Los Angeles Branch of the Higashi Honganji Temple. The celebrations took place mid-September of the year 2600 (1940), as stated on the panorama’s negative. The congregation, numbering several hundred people, is pictured in both traditional Japanese and Western attire.
Overall, an important document of Japanese community in LA, taken shortly before the Japanese-American incarceration and the persecution faced by many Buddhist clerics and practitioners.
