#PF61
Ca. 1900s
Twelve original gelatin silver photos, including three large images ca. 17x22,5 cm (6 ½ x 8 ¾ in), the rest are ca. 5,5x8 cm (2 ¼ x 3 in). All photos mounted on period creamy album leaves ca. 24x34,5 cm (9 ¼ x 13 ½ in); all with period ink captions on the mounts. Mounts slightly waved, photos mildly faded, but overall very good photos.
Attractive collection of original gelatin silver photos of Dakar and the Senegalese people in the early 20th century. Very interesting are two large group portraits of Senegalese families and children, dressed in traditional outfits and posing in front of their round thatched-roof houses. A woman in one of the photos has a mortar and pestle for grinding grains. One large and six smaller photos depict the harbour of Dakar, with native canoes and a French steamer (“Cordillére”), and a city street. There are also three small views of Lisbon harbour. Overall a nice collection of early original photos of Dakar and its people in the early 2th century.
