First translation into Turkish of the foundational work of Arab thought, the first book ‘Introduction’ of the severn-volume treatise, originally written in XIVth century. An introduction to this volume is compiled by Ahmet Jevdet Effendi, later Pasha (1822– 95), which includes the biography of Ibn Khaldûn.
The Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldun (Arabic: مقدّمة ابن خلدون), also known as Ibn Khaldun’s Prolegomena (Ancient Greek: Προλεγόμενα), is a work composed by the historian Ibn Khaldun in 1377 that articulates a comprehensive vision of universal history. Modern scholarship has frequently regarded it as a foundational text in the emergence of the social sciences, anticipating later developments in sociology, demography, and cultural history. Beyond its historical scope, the Muqaddimah engages substantively with Islamic theology and historiography, as well as broader questions in the philosophy of history. It further advances reflections on economics, political theory, and even ecological relationships, underscoring the remarkable breadth of Ibn Khaldun’s intellectual project. The work has, moreover, been interpreted by some commentators as anticipating certain aspects of later evolutionary thought, and has occasionally been characterized as an early precursor to social Darwinist readings of historical development.
First edition in French came out in 1862-1868, the first English edition in 1958.
