Monochrome illustrations. Published amidst the WWII, “Pioneer Lieutenant Shirase” is an uplifting novel that tells the story of the Japanese expedition to the South Pole, led by the visionary Shirase Nobu in the early 20th century.
The author, Okada Saburo (1890-1954), was a prolific novelist with a cosmopolitan career. After studying English at Waseda University, he became a teacher at Japan Women's University and traveled to Paris in 1921.
The book was published by Tsurushobo, a company known for its manga and science fiction publications, as well as introducing Snoopy and the Peanuts to Japanese readers. The illustrator, Kikuzō Itō (1901-1985), was a journalist and a prominent contributor to various publications, including a propaganda book about General Nogi. Text in Japanese.
