#PE45
Ca. 1908
Quarto album (ca. 26,9x21 cm). 25 album paper leaves. With 95 postcards (including 11 printed postcards) and ca. two original gelatin silver photographs, each ca. 8,8x14 cm (3 ½ x 5 ½ in). No captions. Two printed postcards signed, dated, addressed, and stamped. Period full-cloth binding. Edges worn. Small hole on the spine, minor silvering, but overall a very good album with interesting postcards.
Historically interesting collection of 97 gelatin silver photographs and real photo and printed postcards, documenting an early trip to Colorado.
As follows from the inscriptions on two printed postcards, the travelers were apparently from Moline, Illinois. They addressed the postcards to “Dr. C. W. Bandy,” a Moline dentist who, according to newspaper reports, frequently visited Colorado for hunting.
The party began their journey in Colorado Springs, took the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, went on a hunting trip in the Rocky Mountains, and visited Glenwood Springs. At least seven real photo postcards appear to depict the compiler and companions during the trip.
Most images from the collection showcase early topographical views of Colorado, illustrating local landscapes and mountainous terrain with railway lines. About twenty well-executed real photo postcards document the travelers in a locomotive ascending Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway, standing among the rock formations in the Garden of the Gods, and riding horse-drawn carts. Especially interesting are the real photo postcards from a deer hunting trip in the Rocky Mountains. The images show the travelers with guns near log cabins and camps, proudly posing with game, and fishing. The rest of the postcards and photographs primarily feature the now-demolished Second Antlers Hotel and its environs in Colorado Springs, local bridges, aerial views, etc.
Overall, historically interesting collection, illustrating an early deer hunting trip to Colorado.
