Oblong Quarto (ca. 17.5 x 28.5 cm or 7 x 11 ¼ in). 59 stiff black paper leaves (two blank). Ca. 286 gelatin silver photographs from ca. 16 x 11 cm (6 ¼ x 4 ¼ in) to 3 x 3 cm (1 x 1 in).  223 photos with period pencil captions on mounts, two photos captioned in negative. Six photos with photographer’s blind stamp, two signed in negative. Period black cloth boards fasted with string; gilt-tooled generic title “Photographs” on front board; binder’s ink stamp on inner side of rear board. Several mounts loosely inserted and/or with tears/minor losses not affecting images; a couple of photos with mild silvering, one image with loss (no face on portrait), two images previously removed from album, but overall a very good album of interesting strong photos.

A collection of ca. 286 original and studio gelatin silver photographs compiled by lifelong Kansas resident Junius Warren Farmer, with interesting photographs of Kansas State Agricultural College. Born in Horton, Kansas, Farmer attended KSAC (now Kansas State University) where he graduated in 1923. By 1924, he was the county agent for Greenwood County and living in Eureka, Kansas. He continued to do so until his death in 1969. During college he was part of the ROTC and a member of the Kansas chapter of FarmHouse, a professional agriculture fraternity.

Several photographs show Kansas State Agricultural College, now the Manhattan campus of Kansas State University. They include the east wing of Waters Hall (“Ag Hall”), Seaton Hall and Seaton East (“New Engineers Building”), Calvin Hall (“Domestic Sciences Building”), Denison Hall (“Chemistry Building”), Anderson Hall, Fairchild Hall, the ROTC training field, and livestock barns. There are two photos showing “The Kansas Farm House,” likely the house of the FarmHouse fraternity and its members. Other photos are of campus events: “Hobo Day,” “ROTC Field Day,” and a panoramic view of “General Harbord dedicat[ing] the flagpole presented by the class of 1922.” One photo is captioned “Mr. Horlacker’s Stock Judging Class.”

Over eight photos show the first and second “Ag Fair” (1921 and 1922 respectively). There are views of the fairgrounds, including a panoramic shot; parade floats for Kansas State Agricultural College and the Horticultural Club; a “senic [sic] railway” ride; and a photograph of the “Ag Ferris Wheel,” a wooden wheel structure with four seats.

A group portrait shows members of the cabinet of a Presbyterian church in Manhattan, Kansas—identified in the caption. Other images show the students and teachers of the Westminster Presbyterian Sunday School, some are named. Four photos show the May Fetes of 1921 and 1922, including views of celebrations and a horse-drawn “May-basket.” Several photographs are of “Nine Mile Ranch,” owned by a member of the Farmer family. They include the horses, pasture, and ranch house.

Other universities are also shown, including Colorado College in Colorado Springs (Coburn Library, Cossitt Memorial Gym, and Cutler Hall) and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus (Department of Agriculture Administration building, Animal Husbandry Pavilion). Additionally, there are several photographs of an ROTC training camp in Minnesota.

Over thirty photographs show Yellowstone National Park, eight of which are either blind-stamped or signed in negative by Frank Jay Haynes, a professional photographer from Minnesota known for his photographs of the early Northwestern United States. They show Old Faithful Hotel, Lake Yellowstone, and several geysers, waterfalls, and terraces found in the park.

Other photographs in the album include a trip to Colorado with views from the Continental Divide and of Royal Gorge, and snapshots of Farmer with friends and family.

Overall, an interesting collection of photographs of Kansas State Agricultural College and fairs in the early 1920s.
