Historically interesting collection of early, large-size original photographs of Rio de Janeiro, likely taken by a local photographic studio or professional photographer in the 1930s.
The collection contains 16 excellent photos of Rio de Janeiro and two two-part folding panoramas, showing the aerial views of the Sugarloaf and Corcovado Mountains. Most images portray Rio’s residential areas and coastal vistas, including Floriano and Paris Squares (with Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro and clearly visible shop signs “Rex,” “Cruel e o Meu Destino,” “Lourenco,” “Broadway,” “Zoo,” etc.), Niemeyer and Beira-Mar Avenues, Carioca Aqueduct, beachfront scenes in Copacabana and Botafogo, and city views from Corcovado Mt., Sugarloaf Mt. (night), and Vista Chineza. There’s also an important photograph documenting the inauguration of the Christ the Redeemer monument at Corcovado Mt. The image shows President Getúlio Vargas, Cardinal Sebastião Leme, and accompanying dignitaries solemnly posing on the steps leading to the newly-opened statue.
