Ask a question

The scroll with printed and manuscript elements. 88x10 cm. Complete. Written in nastaliq. Backed on linen and cloth (period). On the top of the scroll the printed paper is glued, with printed Ottoman flags. That paper, mounted on serlevha contains the date AH 1324 (1906), from which the dating of the scroll originates. As the scroll itself doesn’t have a date in the colophon, we presume it was created around or before the date, but not much earlier. Wear of the paper, the calendar was in active use with minor loss of the paper from the sides and a few small holes. Overall in fair condition.

A great survival of its time, this ruzname was used on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The scroll contains exact times for prayers on each day of the Hi-jri year for the Bosnian region. This is complemented by a gurrename or listing of the start of each of the twelve lunar months. Knowledge of such events was deemed to be so important that Ottoman calligraphers would prepare lavishly decorated almanacs such as this as souvenirs. This copy apparently was used by a Muslim scholar in Bosnia in the late 19th century.

In Bosnian history this period as important, as after Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 Bosnia was de-facto occupied by Austro-Hungary which later led by annexation of the region in 1908. In these 30 years of the existence of this proxi formation known as ‘Bosnian condominium’ the active resistance to the new rule was common and the series of strikes and protests were recorded. Formally Bosnia and Herzegovina remained the part of Ottoman Empire until 1908.
