Quarto bifolium ca. 25x19,5 cm (9 ¾ x 7 ¾ in). 2 pp. Brown ink on bluish paper; addressed and stamped on the verso of the second leaf. Foldmarks, with two small holes throughout (no text affected), but overall a very good letter written in a legible hand.

Full text of the letter:

"You will much oblige me if you will forward any letters that may arrive for me to your care to Baltimore. I have had a letter this day from New Orleans informing me that Gen. Jesop the Quarter Master Gen would not make up his mind to purchase the Arab or not. Tho we ask only a low figure for her, and tho he has not a Steamer fit to go down the Gulf of Mexico without more chances of her going to the bottom than arriving safe with her Troops &c. But while they can get plenty of Irish and German to fight for them they care little how many are expended with kind remembrance ..."
