An important album of the 1904 steamer voyage by G. C. Conklin, E. W. Conklin (his wife), and Jeff Bolton, showcasing the progress of the Panama Canal only five months into its construction under American leadership (The Panama Canal development, initiated in May 1904 after earlier French setbacks due to disease outbreaks, was led by the United States and concluded with its grand opening in August 1914.). The album covers the travellers' journey from October 21, 1904, to November 23, 1904, aboard SS Peking, navigating through Mazatlán (MX), San Blas (MX), Manzanillo (MX), Acapulco (MX), Corinto (Nicaragua), Ancon (Panama), and concluding in New York on SS Yucatan.
The collection starts with three photographs of the initial stage of the voyage: departure from the Santa Fe railway station, arrival in San Francisco, and SF harbour. The Panama section begins with an image of the residence of Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894), the French diplomat who led the earlier unsuccessful French canal project. Following this is a photograph of an abandoned French dredge, contrasted with a general view of the ongoing American canal construction. There are also several photos of the entrance canal in Ancon, a local plaza, and Panama railway road, which the travellers took to cross the Isthmus.
The other photographs focus on Mexico and Nicaragua, documenting local landmarks (the Basilica Cathedral of Mazatlán, the Fort of San Diego, Hall of Justice, Custom house, old Adobe fort, a post office, etc.), modes of transportation (burro trains, dugouts, pack burros, customs boats, etc.), and natives in attire ("Senora Doncha Sachon" with her baby, a policeman, a stevedore, a street sweeper, olla bearers, steerage passengers, etc.). One photo shows a piglet, amusingly captioned by the compiler, "a member of street cleaning dept."
The album also includes at least five photos of the travelling group and a playful shot of Jeff Bolton, wearing a sombrero with the compiler's humorous note, "Senor Bolton." Several images depict the SS Peking's chief engineer (Wm. MacLure), 2nd officer (Mr. Webb), and a cabin boy with a ship cat "Jim."
The rest of the album portrays the SS City of Peking, the navy of Nicaragua, general views of ports & often crowded streets, native houses, courtyards, etc. Four panoramas show Acapulco, Manzanillo harbour, and customs boat & dugouts. The album concludes with a photo of the Panama Railroad Steamship line building in New York, marking the journey's end. Overall, a historically important album documenting the first months of the US Panama Canal construction.
