Interesting collection of two albums with 104 original photos of Malta dating back to the 1900s, when the island was a British Crown Colony (1813-1964). The albums were compiled by a local British resident - possibly Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke (1839-1932), who served as Governor of Malta in 1903-1907. The images include numerous views of Valletta and its environs, showing Grand Harbour, fortifications, wharves, Victoria Gate, Portes des Bombes, St. Publius Parish Church, Monument to Sir Alexander Ball, Turkish mosque in Marsa, Auberge de Castillo, city streets, squares, gardens, palaces, monuments, &c. Five images show the streets of Valletta, decorated for the visit of King Edward VII (in 1903 or 1907), including a photo of the welcome arch with portraits of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra and the sign “God save our King and Queen.” There are also lively scenes with local street sellers, carriage drivers, passers-by, children and a herd of goats walking and resting on Valletta streets. Several photos show Verdala Palace – a summer residence of the British Governor of Malta near Siggiewi, including general views from a distance, photos of gardens and environs and one of the palace frescoes. About forty images are private photos of the compiler (resembling Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke) and his family, posing in various settings, as well as the interiors of their residence.
Twelve photos in the smaller album show various sites and streets of Valletta (a British cruiser in the Grand Harbour, coastal fort, waterfront, boulevards, Kingsway), including two views of the welcome arch (with the sign “God save the King”) and a promenade decorated with flags and garlands to commemorate the visit of King Edward VII (in 1903 or 1907).
Overall an interesting collection of photos of Malta in the early 20th century.
