#PC73
Ca. 1900s
Fifteen loose gelatin silver photos, including six larger photos ca. 12x17 cm (4 ¾ x 6 ½ in) or slightly smaller, and nine smaller images ca. 8x11 cm (3 ¼ x 4 ¼ in). All photos are mounted on the original card leaves, ca. 23x30 cm (9 x 11 ¾ in). Mounts slightly age-toned and with occasional foxing, several mounts with minor scratches not affecting the images, with several images slightly faded, but overall a very good collection of interesting photos.
Attractive collection of early original amateur photos of New Caledonia, apparently taken by a French colonial resident in the 1900s. Six larger photos from the collection include views of Noumea town and harbour taken from above, the harbour with a steamer and sailboats, a small community in the hills, a colonial residence, and two portraits of New Caledonian men, most likely on French service (one man poses with a rifle, the other one has a bag for correspondence or mail). The smaller photos show French colonial officers posing with native people or taking a boat ride, French soldiers crossing a river, New Caledonian villages and their inhabitants, &c. Overall, interesting early photos of New Caledonia and its people at the beginning of the 20th century.
