Ask a question

Watercolour ca.13.5 x 24 cm (5.5 x 9.5 in.). Recently matted, overall very good watercolour.

Attractive watercolour of the harbour of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands which is "the capital and largest city of the U.S. Virgin Islands, founded in 1666 as Taphus (meaning "beer houses" or "beer halls"). In 1691, the town was renamed Amalienborg (in English Charlotte Amalie) after Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1650–1714), queen consort to King Christian V of Denmark. It contains a deep-water harbour that was once a haven for pirates.., When Christopher Columbus came here in 1493, the area was inhabited by both Island Caribs and Taíno"(Wikipedia). Little is known about the artist however from the photograph and watercolour of the clipper Sobraon found with this watercolour, one can assume that the watercolours were created on a voyage from the United Kingdom to Australia. The Sobraon was used as an immigration ship between England and Australia between the years 1866 and 1890.
