59 cardstock mounts each 48.5 x 38.5 cm (19 x 15 in). With 59 mounted albumen photographs from ca. 36.5 x 27.5 cm (14 ¼ x 10 ¾ in) to 23 x 17.5 cm (9 x 7 in). 29 images captioned in negative; 25 images with period German ink captions on verso of mount. Period green cloth folder neatly rebacked with sheep; blind, gold, and colour-stamped decorative borders on front cover with gilt-tooled title “JTALIA.” Mounts slightly waved and age-toned, several mounts with mild foxing, but overall a very good collection of strong photos.

An attractive collection of large early albumen photographs showing Italy, including Rome, Florence, and cities and towns in the modern-day region of Campania (southern Italy). 15 photographs can be attributed to Giorgio Sommers, a well-known photographer of Italy with studios in Naples and Rome; 14 are attributed to Roberto Rive, who owned a studio in Naples and known for his panoramic views of smaller Italian cities; and one is attributed to Michele Amodio.

25 photographs are of Rome. They show Roman temples (Saturn, Hercules Victor, Venus and Roma, Portunus), the Appian Way (Drusus Arch, Tomb of Caecilia Metella), the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Trajan’s Forum, the Forum of Nerva, the Arch of Titus, the Arch of Constantine, the Piazza del Campidoglio, and the Mausoleum of Hadrian. They also show Pincian Hill, the Quirinale Obelisk, Basilica Saint Paul Outside the Walls, and a view of Saint Peter’s Basilica from Villa Medici.

Eight photographs show Florence, including a view of the city, Santa Maria Novella, the Ponte alle Grazie, Florence Cathedral, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Palazzo Pitti.

16 photographs show Southern Italy (the modern-day region of Campania). They include views of Naples (city and street views, Certosa di Saint Martino), Capri, Amalfi, Pozzuoli, Casamicciola, Sorrento, the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, and the ancient Greek city of Paestum (First Temple of Hera).

Additionally, one photograph shows the Pisa Cathedral, and several others are of pieces of art located in Florence (The Arrotino, Michaelangelo’s David, the Apollino, “Lottatori”) and Vatican City (the Apollo Belvedere, Laocoön and His Sons, etc.).

Overall, an attractive keepsake collection of photographs of Italy, assembled by a German traveller, in the late 19th century.
