Oblong Folio album (ca. 24x31,5 cm or 9 ½ x 12 ½ in). 6 card stock leaves (three are made of two adjacent leaves stuck together). With five mounted albumen photos, from ca. 18,5x27,5 cm (7 ¼ x 10 ¾ in) to ca. 13,5x20,5 cm (5 ¼ x 8 in); and with four mounted gelatin silver photos, each ca. 13,5x20 cm (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ in). One photo is numbered in negative; all photos with period ink captions in German on the mounts. Period brown full cloth album with a gilt-tooled title “Album” on the front board. Mounts slightly waved, but overall a very good album of strong photos.

Attractive collection of large original albumen photographs of the Australian bush, dating back to the late 19th century. Four images show a pioneer’s wooden cabin with its owner sitting in front, a man posing on a dry creek bed in the middle of the forest, and a small river near “Langiwilli, Blue Mountains, New South Wales.” Possibly, the owner of the album meant the Langi Willi estate on Mount Emu Creek near Skipton (Victoria), established as a pastoral run by Skipton pioneers Alexander Anderson, William Wright and James Montgomery in ca. 1838-1839. The property was further subdivided in 1859, and a grand mansion was built there in 1893 by a noted Australian architect, Charles D’Ebro, for the current owners, Phillip Russel and his family. The property was sold in 2016 after 157 years of continuous ownership. The small stream visible in both photos is possibly Mount Emu Creek.

The album starts with a photo of the Sutherland Dock on the Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour – a site included in the Australian Commonwealth Heritage List. The ship in the dock is Norddeutscher Lloyd Dampfer [steamer] “Friedrich der Grosse,” which was built in 1896 and served as a German Imperial mail steamer on the routes to Australia and New York. At the onset of WW1, the ship was interned by the U.S. and confiscated in 1917, becoming USS “Huron.” The album also includes four excellent gelatin silver photos illustrating the process of loading a ship with cotton bales in Galveston, Texas. Overall an attractive collection of early original photos of the Australian bush, Cockatoo Island Dockyard and cotton shipping in Galveston, TX.

A list of captions: N.D.L.D. “Friedrich der Grosse” im Sutherland Dock, Cockatoo Island, Australien; Einschrauben der Baumwolle-Ballen im Schiffsraum in Galveston. I; II; III; IV; Im Urwalde Australiens; Langiwilli, Spinnengewebe im Busch; Eine Ansiedelung im Busche Australiens; Langiwilli, Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australien.
