Historically interesting collection of early, well-executed photographs, documenting the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco.
The PPIE world fair, held from February 20 to December 4, 1915, celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and highlighted San Francisco’s recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair occupied a 636-acre site along the northern shore, now the Marina District, attracting around 19 million visitors. It featured numerous grand structures built exclusively for the event, most of which were dismantled shortly afterward (except for the Palace of Fine Arts, which still stands today).
The album contains 84 vibrant views of the Panama International Exposition apparently taken by an American tourist during the summer of 1915. About thirty excellent photographs show the main architectural structures of the PPIE, including palaces (Horticulture, Food Products, Fine Arts, Varied Industries, Transportation), international pavilions (Siam, Portugal, Canada, Netherlands), buildings (California & Ferry), towers (Jewels and Italian), arches (the Setting and Rising Sun), and fountains (Energy and Earth). Several candid urban scenes vividly portray dressed-up visitors, busily strolling through the Court of the Universe and Court of Four Seasons. There are also two interesting portraits likely showing the compiler and his female companion proudly posing with the coveted visitors' medals. Most of the other photos are well-executed close-up views of exhibited statues - the End of Trail, Pioneer Mother, Prima Mater, the Rising Sun, Maidenhood, Genius of Creation, Fountain of Energy, the Kiss, etc. The album closes with vibrant photographs of the “Joy Zone,” showing specially created attractions – Japan Beautiful, Creation Ride, and The Souvenir Watch Palace of the New Haven Clock Company.
The collection also includes a large, striking photograph of the Tower of the Sun at night, with the inscription "Photo by Eachus!" on its verso.
Overall, historically interesting album illustrating the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
