Oblong Folio album (ca. 28,5x36,5 cm or 11 ¼ x 14 ½ in). 24 card stock leaves with tissue guards. With 110 mounted gelatin silver photos (ca. 25 in colour, the rest – black and white), from ca. 6x10,5 cm (2 ¼ x 4 in) to ca. 5x5 cm (2x2 in). Over eighty photos with period individual or group manuscript calligraphic white ink captions on the mounts; most leaves are also dated from 1935 to 1937. The compiler’s name “Frank Greaves” is written in white ink on the inner side of the front cover. Period black full cloth binding, fastened with a string. Boards rubbed on extremities, spine with minor cracks and losses on the top and bottom, several tissue guards with minor creases or tears,  but overall a very good album of interseting photos.

Attractive extensive collection of original photos of Pakistan and India, taken by a young British military man in ca. 1935-1937. Eleven images illustrate the compiler’s service in Quetta (Balochistan, Pakistan), including a series of views of destruction after the earthquake on May 31, 1935 (“Kabari market,” “remains of the church,” “clearing the city,” “no. 2 post,” “carpenters,” two photos of the tent camp erected for survivors and rescue workers, two scenes of “removing bodies”), there are also photos of a picket post in the Bolan Pass and “the depot of the Gurkhas.”

Very interesting are over forty photos, taken in and around the British cantonment town of Chakrata, situated in the Himalayan foothills of the Dehradun district. The images include four lively portraits of “hill beauties,” views of the town and serpentine road in the surrounding hills taken from above, colour photos of Himalayan sunsets, photos of “McMullen cinema,” “officers tennis club,” “looking down the valley,” “road to Kailana,” gates to Sahiya and Kalsi rest camps, waterfalls, &c. About twenty photos of Meerut include a series of images from the 1936 Christmas celebration in the “Corporal’s mess,” views of St. John’s church, “office staff,” “signals’ lines,” “bungalows,” “the park,” &c. About thirty photos of Delhi show “Willingdon air station,” a British military truck “on maneuvres” in Gurgaon (Gurugram), Jumna Bridge, “old Delhi walls,” Qutb Minar, Taj Mahal, Jumna Masjid, the Iron Pillar, Viceroy’s House, the circular House of Parliament, Chandni Chowk clock tower, India Gate (All India War Memorial), Delhi Fort, Kashmiri Gate, King Edward VII equestrian statue, &c.

Overall an interesting collection of original snapshot photos of Chakrata, Meerut, Delhi and the aftermath of the 1935 Quetta earthquake.
