A interesting collection of 78 studio and amateur gelatin silver photographs of British India, compiled by a newlywed couple travelling in India on their honeymoon. One photo is signed by A. Hefferan, who produced a series of views of Darjeeling in the early 20th century.
Photographs from the album show Delhi, with views of the Red Fort and the Rang Mahal; Jama Masjid; Kashmiri Gate; the elephant statues at Delhi Gate; Qutab Minar; the Delhi-Meerut Pillar, one of the Pillars of Ashoka; the baoli (stepwell) at Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah (mausoleum); the tomb of Mirza Jehangir; Safdarjung’s Tomb; Humayun’s Tomb; and the Iron Pillar of Delhi. There are several photographs of Agra: Moti Masjid/Pearl Mosque at Agra Fort and views of the Taj Mahal (a panoramic shot of Agra featuring the Taj Mahal in the distance and close-up views). Six photographs show sites made famous after the Indian Rebellion of 1857: ruins of the Residency at Lucknow and the Cawnpore Massacre Well Memorial. Also included are mountainous views of Darjeeling and the double loop on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (opened in 1881).
There are also photos of camel carts and their drivers, elephant riders, litter carriers, a group portrait of Indian children, and photos of the compilers. Additionally, there are several images of the compilers’ wedding, with shots of the cake, gifts, and wedding party.
Overall, a lively collection of views of Northern India and its people through the eyes of a British newlywed couple in the early 20th century.
