Oblong Quarto (ca. 19.5 x 25.5 cm or 7 ¾ x 10 in). 17 cardstock leaves (two blank). 60 mounted gelatin silver photographs with 54 larger ones from ca. 11.5 x 7 cm (4 ½ x 2 ¾ in) to 10.5 x 6 cm (4 x 2 ¼ in) and six smaller ones ca. 7.5 x 5.5 cm (2 ¾ x 2 in). With six gelatin silver photographs loosely inserted ca. 9.5 x 7 cm (3 ¾ x 2 ¾ in). All mounted photos with period ink captions on mounts (some captions relate to two photos); three loose photos with period pencil captions on verso. Period grey card boards fastened with a string. Binder’s ink stamp on inner side of rear board. Boards slightly rubbed; mounts slightly waved, several photos with minor silvering, but overall a very good album of interesting photos.

A lively collection of original snapshot photographs from a safari trip in British East Africa, likely modern-day Uganda, Kenya, and northern Tanzania.

Most of the album (53 photographs) documents the safari, showing hunters posing with game (elephant, impala, hartebeest, gazelle, etc.), their camps and rest houses, and East African scenery with several captions identifying locations (“Lokokippi,” “Lilo,” Rhino Camp, Mutir, Gayaza, Luguru, “Mozekol,” “Powaa,” Bombo, “Masako,” Paranga, “Asna,” Sanga, and “Rom”). The other photos include portraits of the native guides and porters, Karamojan (Uganda) warriors and a Karamojan woman with her children, a scene of “A Banana Swamba,” and several portraits of the compiler and his friends.

Other photos include three shots of their safari vehicle, a Durant Rugby, loaded with luggage (captioned “Rugby Durant – 18 H[orse]. P[ower].”) and one photo of the RMS Samuel Baker on the White Nile along its Butiaba (Uganda) – Nimule (South Sudan) route. There is also a photo of an elephant at Khartoum Zoo and three group portraits of the compiler or his friends in Port Sudan, Nairobi, and Sultan Hamud (Kenya).

Additionally, there are six loose photographs, including a group portrait of the compiler and his friends in front of a directional signpost in Kenya and them on a picnic (the signpost reading: 657, Route 402, West Kenya, Nanyuki 33, Meru 94, Nyeri 3, Fort Hall 40, Isiolo Q.S. 88, Archers Post); a photo of a safari camp in Kenya; “European Hospital, NRB” (possibly Nairobi); and a woman in front of a tree with many weaver bird nests.

Overall, an attractive collection of snapshots documenting an East African safari in the 1920s.
