Oblong Octavo (ca. 14.5 x 19.5 cm or 5 ¾ x 7 ¾ in). Twelve stiff black paper leaves. Eleven gelatin silver photographs ca. 14.5 x 8.5 cm (5 ¾ x 3 ½ in). All images with period ink captions on mounts. Period cloth album with thin black border on front cover; binder’s paper label on bottom left corner of inner rear cover. A couple of photos very mildly faded or with minor silvering, but overall a very good album of interesting photos.
A collection of original gelatin silver photographs of the Territory of Hawaii in 1915, compiled by a US Geological Survey engineer, Roger C. Rice. Rice was later a district engineer for the USGS and an author of two surface water supply papers.
The photographs show ‘Iolani Palace (capitol building from 1893 to 1969, formerly the official residence of the Hawaiian monarch), Ali‘iolani Hale (current seat of the Hawaii State Supreme Court) , Kawaiaha‘o Church, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Hawaii State Library in Honolulu, “the University Club,” the view from Nu‘uanu Pali in Oahu, the Japanese garden at Moanalua Gardens, Waikiki Beach, a “typical home of some of the natives,” and Olokele Canyon in Kauai.
Overall, an early look at the Territory of Hawaii (1900-1959).
